Fire Nation

The Fire Nation is one of the world's four nations. It is an absolute monarchy led by the Fire Lord. Geographically, the continent is located on the planet's equator in the western hemisphere, and is composed of several islands, and therefore is an archipelago. Its capital is at the Fire Nation Capital. The Fire Nation is home to most known Firebenders. The Fire Nation is the second-largest nation in the world in terms of population and area; second to the Earth Kingdom. The Fire Nation economy is the most powerful in the world, with a strong industrial sector and extensive technological developments. It is also known for its large, powerful military.

Water Tribes

The Water Tribes are mostly located on the poles of the world, the Southern Water Tribe and the Northern Water Tribe are the most prominent of the tribes in the Water Bending world. These two tribes hold most of the water benders, but there are a few water tribes sprinkled through out the other areas of the poles. There are a group of water benders located in a swamp in the Earth Kingdom. The Water Tribe is far less powerful than either the Earth Kingdom or the Fire Nation. Its economy is very small and is dependent on ocean resources, which can be attributed to the relatively small population of the Water Tribes as the third most populous nation.

Earth Kingdom

The Earth Kingdom is one of the world's four major nations. It is a confederate monarchy led by the Earth King. A massive continent taking up most of the planet's eastern hemisphere, the Earth Kingdom is roughly analogous to Eurasia in our world. The Earth Kingdom is the largest country in the world in both population figures and land area. Thus, it is an ethnically diverse country, with wide variance in customs between different provinces and tribes. It also has a large economy based on agriculture and limited industry, though it is not as powerful as the technologically advanced Fire Nation. Unlike the Air Nomads and Water Tribe, the Earth Kingdom has not suffered a heavy loss of life or any sort of extinction in civilization or its Earthbenders during the War.

Air Temples

The Air Nomads is a collective term for a nation of people who practice the discipline of Airbending. One of the series' four major nations, the Air Nomads were wanderers by definition, but had four Air Temples, one at each corner of the globe, hidden away atop mountain ranges in the northern Earth Kingdom and on three remote islands. The Air Nomads were home to a monastic order of men and women who practiced Airbending. Unlike the other Nations, the people of the Air Nomads were, without any seen exception, all benders due to the high level of spirituality of their people. The Air Nomads were the smallest of the four nations in the world. Its economy, such as it was entirely based on limited agriculture. Population of the Air Nomads was small compared to even the Water Tribe, and was far smaller than either of the world's two major powers, the Fire Nation and the Earth Kingdom. However, they were the only nation completely composed of benders, as all Air Nomads were capable of Airbending.

Spirit World

The Spirit World is a parallel plane of existence that co-exists along with the World of Avatar. It is the home of spirits, immortal supernatural entities which often embody different aspects of life and nature. All the past lives of the Avatar exist in the spirit world; it is unknown whether other mortals travel here after death in this way. It is difficult, and therefore rare, for a human to pass into the Spirit World; conversely, only a handful of spirits are able to exist physically in the mortal world, having to give up their immortality to do so. The Spirit World and the physical world are closest together during the solstices, which makes it possible for spirits to manifest in the mortal world and for humans to pass into the Spirit World. There are also certain locations in the physical world which act as bridges to the Spirit World; these locations are often revered by cultures living near them, such as the Spirit Oasis in the North Pole. The Avatar itself acts as a spiritual bridge between both the worlds and can travel between them freely, though bending has no effect in the Spirit World.
